Felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of specialty choices and wondered how you REALLY know if a specialty is the right fit
Thought, “I guess everyone just figures it out during rotations”
Wished you could time travel ahead and see what it's REALLY like to be an attending in that specialty
Felt pressure from family, or peers to choose a “safe” or “prestigious” specialty
Worry that you might fall in love with a specialty that requires having research experience and then not being able to match
Yet, medical students are expected to make this life-changing choice with limited exposure and guidance. Here are some dirty secrets that medical school and residency administrators don’t like to advertise
How many times have you heard that someone was “absolutely sure” that they were going to do a certain specialty and then once they start clinical rotations they realize it’s not for them or they fall in love with a different specialty See the proof here
Or even worse, you don’t figure out your “true calling” until after you have applied to the MATCH. Check this out
Or the devastating consequence that - 1 out of 5 surgical residents will suffer when they choose to switch specialties in the middle of residency. See here
Or the most depressing statistic (IMHO) is that you can just suck it up and be the 1 in 4 practicing physicians who declare that they would pick a different specialty if they could do it all over again. See the stats here

Meet your guide
D.O.
I wasn’t a typical medical student. I came to medicine as a non-traditional student, having worked in the medical field before starting medical school. Like many students, I was drawn to several different specialties, but ultimately chose emergency medicine because of its pace, variety, and impact. I loved it - but even after matching into EM, I realized that finding the right career fit is rarely as straightforward as it seems.
It took several more years of learning, trying new things, and pursuing a fellowship in medical toxicology and getting additional board certifications in emergency medical services and addiction medicine before I found the perfect combination that allowed me to practice medicine on my terms - with the balance, compensation, and fulfillment I craved. That’s when it hit me: Medical students need earlier access to better information and guidance to avoid the wasted time, money, and frustration of figuring it out the hard way.
That's why I created Residency Insight and Navigational Guidance (R.I.N.G.) – a movement and a community designed to help medical students cut through the confusion, gain real-world insights, and confidently find their perfect career fit.
But it’s not just about finding your specialty – it’s about finding your people. The students you connect with through R.I.N.G. will be on the same path as you are, and will become the people who turn into lifelong friends, trusted confidants since no one else can understand the journey as they do. Their careers will intersect with yours time and again and provide an invaluable source of support and strength throughout your career.
How to learn more about specialties as a pre-med or first 2-3 years of your med school, not just during clinical rotations in the 3rd and 4th year
How to ensure your specialty aligns with your core values, life goals, and lifestyle preferences
You’ll get advice from many sources when choosing a specialty—but not all of it is accurate or unbiased. In this webinar, you’ll learn how to filter through biases and misleading information so you can make a fully informed and confident decision about your specialty.
Choosing the wrong specialty can cost you time, happiness, and career satisfaction.
